Last Action Hero is a 1993 action-comedy-fantasy film directed by John McTiernan. It is a satire of the action genre and its clichés, containing several parodies of action films in the form of films within the film.

The film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as Jack Slater, a fictional Los Angeles police detective, and Austin O'Brien as Danny Madigan, a young boy who enjoys watching action films. Danny lives in what the film portrays as the real world, but Slater is a fictional character even within the film, the hero of the Jack Slater series of action films. Slater and the other characters in the Slater film series inhabit a parallel universe corresponding to the world of the Slater films, and Danny is magically transported into this world while watching the latest Jack Slater sequel. Schwarzenegger also plays himself as the actor portraying Slater in the film.

Plot

The story is an adventure brought about when a boy named Danny Madigan (O'Brien) is magically transported into the surreal world of an action film featuring his fictional idol, Jack Slater (Schwarzenegger). Slater is the hero of the Jack Slater film series, a fearless LAPD detective whose commanding officer Lieutenant Dekker (McRae) frequently yells at him for breaking the rules. Schwarzenegger also plays himself as the actor who plays Slater.

Since his father died, Danny has been skipping school to watch movies with his friend Nick, an old man who operates an old movie theater in New York City. Nick invites Danny to a private screening of Jack Slater IV and gives him a magic ticket. Before the movie, Nick tears the ticket in half, gives one half to Danny, and puts the other in the ticket box.

A few minutes into Slater IV , Danny's ticket stub begins to glow, and some dynamite from within the movie flies out of the screen, lands near Danny, and explodes. When Danny wakes up, he is in the back seat of Slater's car. He tries to convince Slater that they are in a movie, but Slater sees nothing unusual about his world, which includes a cartoon cat detective named Whiskers (DeVito), a black-and-white image of Humphrey Bogart, and female officers dressed in outlandish battle armor.

As Slater and Danny drive along the Los Angeles coast, Danny recognizes the mansion from Slater IV' s introduction and persuades Slater to investigate it. Despite Slater's skepticism, they meet the villains, crime boss Tony Vivaldi (Quinn) and his British henchman Mr. Benedict (Dance). After overhearing Danny discussing his role in the Slater film, Benedict follows Slater and Danny as they visit Slater's daughter Whitney (Wilson), raids the house with some thugs, takes the magic ticket from Danny, and escapes after a gun battle with Slater and Whitney. While inspecting the ticket at the mansion, he discovers a portal to the real world.

Eventually, Slater and Danny figure out that Vivaldi plans to kill his rivals at a rooftop funeral by planting nerve gas in the body. After a brief scene in which Whiskers saves Slater and Danny from betrayal by Slater's friend, Slater tells Danny to commandeer a construction crane, takes the body and escapes from the funeral, and disposes of the body with Danny's help at the crane. Whitney arrives in her truck immediately afterward, and Slater and Danny use the truck to crash into the villains' mansion shortly after Benedict kills Vivaldi. In the ensuing struggle, Benedict and his butler fall through a portal into the real world, and Slater and Danny follow them.

In the real New York City, Slater is disappointed to learn that he is a fictional character and resentful at having been given such a hard life by his film's writers. While talking with Danny's mother, he learns to be sensitive and loses interest in violent action.

Meanwhile, Benedict learns that he can get away with murder and hatches a plan to wipe out Slater by killing Schwarzenegger. Slater correctly guesses Benedict's plan after Benedict uses the ticket to escape a car chase, leaving behind a newspaper with hand-drawn marks on some film advertisements.

At the premiere of Jack Slater IV , after a brief encounter with Schwarzenegger, Slater confronts the Ripper (Noonan), the ax-wielding villain who killed Slater's young son in Jack Slater III and whom Benedict has brought to the real world. In a rooftop scene similar to the one in Slater III , The Ripper throws Danny from the roof before being electrocuted by Slater. Slater finds Danny clinging to the side of the building and pulls him to safety, but Benedict confronts Slater and shoots him in the chest. When Slater finally kills Benedict, the ticket flutters off the roof and lands in front of a movie theater showing The Seventh Seal . Death (McKellen) walks through the resulting portal and follows Slater and Danny to Nick's theater, where Danny hopes to save Jack by transporting him back into the Slater film. Death advises Danny to find the other half of the magic ticket, which he does, and Slater and Danny are transported into Slater IV , where Slater's wounds are minor. On Jack's insistence, Danny returns to the real world. The film ends as Slater explains his new insights to Dekker, then drives into the sunset.

Cameos

Franco Columbu, Schwarzenegger's friend, roommate, and fellow body builder, makes an appearance during the opening credits as producer of the new Slater movie. Columbu also appeared in The Terminator as a T-800 in the future who sneaks into a base and attempts to kill Kyle Reese.
Tina Turner makes a cameo appearance at the climax of Jack Slater III as the mayor of Los Angeles; she tries to convince Slater not to enter a hostage situation.
When Danny and Slater arrive at LAPD headquarters, Sharon Stone and Robert Patrick appear outside the front door as Catherine Tramell (from Basic Instinct ) and the T-1000 (from Terminator 2: Judgment Day ), respectively. Stone had earlier played Schwarzenegger's wife in Total Recall .
Sylvester Stallone makes a cameo, posing as "The Terminator" for a poster promoting Terminator 2 ; to which Schwarzenegger states "He's a fantastic actor. That's his greatest performance yet". Danny, however, is horrified.
Model/actress Angie Everhart appears as a video store clerk. Danny comments on her as being too attractive to be working at a video store, at which point Jack responds "I agree. She should be working with us".
An animated cat named Whiskers was voiced by an uncredited Danny DeVito, who starred with Schwarzenegger in Twins and Junior .
During the argument between Jack and the Lieutenant, the TV behind the lieutenant can be seen to be playing Predator, another Schwarzenegger film.
During the premiere of Jack Slater IV in the real world, a number of celebrities make cameo appearances as themselves, including: Maria Shriver (Schwarzenegger's real-life wife), Little Richard, Entertainment Tonight host Leeza Gibbons, James Belushi, Damon Wayans, Chevy Chase, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Timothy Dalton.
As Slater and Danny go into the movie theatre to find the real Schwarzenegger, MC Hammer asks Slater: "Arnold! The deal is done, right? Slater V . The soundtrack."
Ian McKellen makes a cameo as Death, after a screening of Ingmar Bergman's film, The Seventh Seal comes to life.
Before the Hamlet sequence, wherein the Laurence Olivier version is played on a projector, the teacher who introduces the film is Joan Plowright, an English actress and Laurence Olivier's third wife. Noting her students' apparent ignorance of Olivier's storied career, she tells them they may remember him as Zeus in Clash of the Titans , one of Olivier's final roles.

Reception

Last Action Hero was billed at that time as "the next great summer action movie" and many movie insiders predicted the film to be a huge blockbuster, especially following the success of Schwarzenegger's previous film, Terminator 2: Judgment Day .

The film grossed $USD15,338,241 on its opening weekend, for an average of $6,651 from 2,306 theaters, and ended its run with only $50,016,394 in the United States but making an additional $87,202,095 overseas, totaling US$137,298,489 worldwide. In an A&E biography of Schwarzenegger, the actor (who was also the film's executive producer) says that the film could have done even better if not for bad timing, since it came out a week after Jurassic Park , the biggest movie phenomenon of that year. Schwarzenegger states that he tried to persuade his co-producers to postpone the film's June 18 release in the US by four weeks, but they turned a deaf ear on the grounds that the movie would hav
